
She sat alone at the kitchen table on a quiet Sunday morning. A notebook lay open in front of her, the first page blank except for the date. She had been with him for years. They had built a life together, or something that looked like one. They had weathered seasons of joy and seasons of doubt. They had laughed until they could not breathe and fought until they could not speak. They had, in the eyes of the world and in the private chambers of their own hearts, become a unit. And now, he was waiting for her answer. Not a proposal, exactly, but the question that had been hanging in the air between them for months. Are we doing this forever? Are we committing, fully, finally, with no exit doors left ajar?
