
She had always been independent. She built her own career, managed her own finances, made her own decisions, and filled her own life with friendships, hobbies, and a sense of purpose that had nothing to do with a man. When she met him, she was not looking for someone to complete her. She was already complete. He was supposed to be an addition to an already full life. And for the first year, he was. They maintained their separate friendships, their separate routines, their separate apartments.
