
She left her phone on the table when she went to the bathroom. It was unlocked. She had nothing to hide, and she trusted him not to look. When she came back, the phone was exactly where she had left it, but the screen was lit, and the messaging app was open. He was sitting on the couch, his jaw tight, his eyes fixed on something that was not there. She asked what was wrong. He said he had seen a message from a male colleague, a perfectly innocent exchange about a work deadline. He wanted to know why she had not mentioned this colleague before. He wanted to know what else she had not told him. She realized, in that cold moment, that her trust in him had been a one way street. She trusted him. He did not trust her. And a relationship with trust only flowing in one direction is not a relationship. It is a surveillance operation.
