
She sat across from her therapist, exhausted and embarrassed. She had just ended another relationship, or what she had called a relationship, with a man who was emotionally unavailable, inconsistent, and incapable of giving her what she needed. As she described the breakup, she heard her own words echo back at her as though she had spoken them before. Because she had. This was the third time in five years she had fallen for the same man wearing a different face. The details changed. The job, the height, the hometown, the way they met. But the pattern was identical. And she was only now beginning to realize that the common denominator in all of these stories was not the men. It was her.
